Today, Benedict reminds us in the most unambiguous way, we must prepare our hearts and bodies for the battle of Holy Obedience. What Benedict understood is that we are ever vulnerable to our selfish self-centered desires. If you choose, you can attribute this to the work of the dark force within each of us, or you might instead choose to simply embrace that we are weak human creatures, lacking the strength to follow the way—unaided.
What is not possible to us by nature,
let us ask the Holy One to supply by the help of grace.
... by the light of life—we must run and do now what will profit us forever.
We are truly not alone in this undertaking. But we must ask for his saving grace. If we do this, we will prevail. But we must ask. God will not fail us. But God wants us to be partners in this enterprise. If we attempt this alone, we will fail. We will succumb to our own willful hearts, seeking to satisfy our most base desires.
We must open our eyes today to our behavior and witness our actions through his eyes. We must surrender so that God can be in control.
God is with us, holding us up so that the reign of God
may be made plain in us and become hope to others.
If we can become peacemakers, if we can control our need to control,
if we can distinguish between our wants and needs, than anybody can.
