Never Neglect and Never Exaggerate

I write to you this morning from Normandy, France. Seven days ago, on June 6, 2026, the world marked the 82nd anniversary of D-Day—the historic moment when the Allies restored freedom (liberté) to Europe. As we tour the local museums and beaches, immersing ourselves in the history of that era, it is clear that those events represented a perilous turning point for Europe and all of humanity.
Why should this history matter to a Benedictine reading this post today?
Sister Joan reminds us to never neglect and never exaggerate, but rather to live life normally, thoughtfully, and profoundly. The massive undertaking of D-Day was undoubtedly a moment in world history that demanded exactly this kind of intense, devoted effort.
This environment has drawn me back to Living the Rule, which I had neglected since April 26. I had allowed myself to be pulled away by excuses and tasks that seemed more urgent at the time. Yet, there is truly nothing more important than reading, reflecting, and meditating on the daily message of the Rule as we begin our day. We are invited to start no task, and begin no day, without first inviting Him to join us.
